Mosque-goers ask for parking restrictions to be suspended

The Mosque committee wants parking restrictions outside Jamia Mosque to be lifted for half an hour on Fridays during prayers so worshippers can park. THEY DONT ALLOW PEOPLE TO PARK ON DOUBLE YELLOW LINES OUTSIDE THE DOCTORS SURGERY.

Up to 2,000 people attend the prayers and say they often have difficulty parking in the Rose Hill Street building’s car park because there is not enough space.

WHERE WILL YOU PARK IN 5 YEARS TIME THEN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD

Now the mosque’s committee has called for Derby City Council to allow people to park on double yellow lines near the building between 1.30pm and 2pm on Fridays.

DOUBLE YELLOW LINES STAY, KEEP THE WARDENS WORKING OVER TIME ON FRIDAYS

But the council has said that the double yellow lines are in effect for safety purposes and that mosque-goers could use a nearby car park.

HOPE ITS A PAY AND DISPLAY.

Mosque secretary Gulfraz Nawaz said two or three traffic wardens regularly visit the streets on a Friday putting tickets on cars.

E E EDL WARDENS

He said: “We just want half an hour where people can park and know they won’t be ticketed. The council was asked about this a year ago and we thought something might be done.

SO DO PEOPLE WHO GOT TO SEE THEIR DOCTORS,DOUBLE YELLOWS STAY

“We will probably have to get a petition together. It is difficult for people to park further away as these streets are often already full. There is also the difficulty where some people are elderly and they can’t walk far.”

MY HEART BLEEDS FOR YOU

Councillor Fareed Hussain, who represents Arboretum ward, said he had spoken with council officers about the parking last year.

I BET YOU DID

Mr Hussain said he thought an “understanding” had been reached where traffic wardens would show leniency towards people parking for Friday prayers. “They said they would show greater understanding,” he said. “As far as I am concerned that was what was happening.”

LAW IS LAW

But Councillor Christopher Poulter, cabinet member for neighbourhoods, said the yellow lines were there for safety purposes.

WELL SAID

“If it was safe to park in that location there would be no need for any waiting restriction,” he said. “The safety of road users and residents is paramount and enforcement around the mosque area is carried out regularly following complaints. We met some time ago to discuss the situation with the mosque representatives and we explained our position.

THEY DONT LIKE OUR LAWS THEY WANT SHARIA LAW

“It is important that our enforcement procedures are consistent across the city and if we were to make any unique arrangements in one specific area then our enforcement practices may be considered inconsistent.”

THAT IS RIGHT

A city council spokesman said “regular enforcement” was carried out in the mosque area. But he added that it cost only 20p to park in Grove Street’s pay and display car park which is approximately five minutes walk from the building.

THATS CHEAP
