Two plane hijackers ‘beaten to death by passengers’ in China

TWO men who allegedly tried to hijack a plane in China were beaten to death by passengers and crew.
The Global Times newspaper reported that two of the suspects died in hospital from injuries they suffered during the ensuing fight with passengers and crew on board.
The men were part of a six-strong gang involved in the foiled hijack of a Tianjin Airlines flight bound for the regional capital of Urumqi last Friday.
Just minutes after the flight took off from Hetian, southwest Xinjiang, the men, all aged between 20 and 36, stood up and announced their plans to terrified passengers.
The gang reportedly broke a pair of aluminium crutches and used them to attack passengers while attempting to break into the cockpit, Hou Hanmin, a regional government spokeswoman said.
They were tackled by police and passengers who tied them up with belts before the plane, carrying 101 people, returned to the airport safely just 22 minutes later.
Hanmin added that police were still testing materials they had been carrying, thought to be explosives.
The men were reported to be Uighurs, the local Muslim ethnic minority. There have been clashes between authorities and Uighurs resentful of government controls over their religion and culture.
Dilxat Raxit, spokesman for the German-based World Uyghur Congress which campaigns for Uighurs’ rights, said that it wasn’t a hijacking attempt, rather an in-flight brawl over a seat dispute.
“We warn China not to use this incident as another excuse for crackdown,” he said in an emailed statement.
Two more suspects are reportedly being treated in hospital after mutilating themselves.

lib Dem: Cabinet minister describes record unemployment levels as GOOD news

Energy Secretary Ed Davey admitted slow economic growth was worrying but said jobless figures could have been much higher

CABINET minister Ed Davey sparked fury yesterday by describing record unemployment levels as “good news”.

The Energy Secretary admitted slow economic growth was worrying but said jobless figures could have been much higher.

He said: “What has been good news is how the labour market has reacted, how unemployment has reacted.

“We have not seen the big increase in unemployment that many people predicted.”

Mr Davey made the remarks on a visit to the North East, where unemployment stands at 11.5%.

Across the country there are more than 2.6 million people out of work, 8% of the population.

Figures released this week also showed there were just under a million youngsters not in work, education or training.

Economists fear more job cuts could be around the corner after the economy sank back into recession again.

He blamed slow growth on “global forces like oil prices and the situation the eurozone”.

Dickheads

A spokeswoman for Mr Davey said yesterday his comments had been taken out of context.

She added: “He simply wanted to draw attention to the fact that his department’s policies have helped attract investment and create jobs.”

But Labour’s Shadow Employment Minister Stephen Timms said the remarks were “staggering”.

He said: “This government is so out of touch they describe the highest level of unemployment in a generation as good news. What planet are they on?”

Ross Smith, of the North East Chamber of Commerce, said: “The fact that our member businesses have been creating jobs is clearly good news.

“However, this is nowhere near enough to balance out cuts being made across the public sector.”

Northern TUC boss Kevin Rowan added: “Mr Davey must be aware the North East has the highest unemployment in the UK with nine jobseekers per vacancy.

“Only last week we heard an additional 6,000 people in our region are now out of work compared to last month.

“I find it incredible a Cabinet minister could describe this social and economic catastrophe as good news.”

Benagli Immigrant in Court Over Somerset Child Sex Assaults

A Bengali immigrant has appeared in court charged with serious sexual offences against young girls in Street.

Muhammod Kamal Uddin, 40, currently resident at Colnbrook Immigration Centre, near London, was brought before South Somerset Magistrates in custody.

He was charged with four allegations of sexual assault on victims aged 11 and 12 on various dates between September 1, 2010 and December 31, 2010.

He did not enter pleas to any of the charges and prosecutor Chris Ansell said the matters were so serious that they must be dealt with at the crown court. The magistrates ordered the defendant to be sent straight to Taunton Crown Court to appear at a preliminary hearing on May 21. They refused an application for bail by defending solicitor Chris Ivory and remanded Uddin in custody.

Jamaican Serial Rapist Chan Wright Raped Again After Avoiding Deportation

A serial sex attacker who avoided deportation after judges ruled it was “irrational” to assume he would offend again has a psychopathic personality, a court has heard.

Chan Wright, 40, raped and brutalised three women in a series of attacks over a 15-year period. He is facing a life-sentence for the crimes – and now tests have shown he has personality characteristics similar to a psychopath.

Experts advised that, if he is ever released, he will need to be monitored round the clock by the authorities.

Wright received a high score in a test to see if he suffered from the personality disorder, the High Court in Edinburgh heard yesterday.

The court heard how the Jamaican immigrant is unable to accept his guilt for the sex attacks. He is also unable to understand his victims’ pain and suffering.

Such behaviour is a common feature of psychopathy, a psychological condition which affects the behaviour of some serious criminal offenders. The revelation emerged on the first day of a two-day hearing into whether Wright should receive a life sentence for his September 2011 conviction for raping and brutalising three women. He also indecently assaulted another two women. Wright preyed on the females in a series of assaults in Edinburgh, West Lothian, Angus and Aberdeenshire over a 15-year period. The verdicts in these cases came four years after Court of Session judges stopped him being deported.

Then, an immigration tribunal decided the rapist and cocaine trafficker posed a high risk of committing further sex and drugs offences, but Lord Johnston, sitting with Lord Eassie and Lord Wheatley, said its conclusion was “irrational and not justified”. Wright had already served four years for raping a teenager in Livingston in 1995.

Peter Hain Quits Labour Shadow Cabinet

Posted in British Government, Wales with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on May 14, 2012 by britishloyalist

Peter Hain has stepped down as shadow Welsh secretary.

The veteran MP said he wanted to “explore other challenges” after 16 years on the Labour frontbench – including the Severn barrage project and Africa.

In a letter to Ed Miliband, he said he intended to stay on as an MP and would fight Neath again at the next general election.

But he said that the “thumping victory” at local elections in Wales over which he presided this month provided a suitable moment to step aside.

His move – which he said he alerted Miliband to before Christmas – will add to speculation that the Labour leader is poised to make a wider reshuffle of his top team.

In his resignation letter, Hain – who has held a number of Cabinet roles – said the election results had been a “huge vote of confidence in Labour’s vision for the country and for you personally”.

“However, as I explained when we met before Christmas, I have wanted for a while to explore other opportunities and I am therefore resigning as shadow secretary of state for Wales to focus on two new challenges.”

He said he had been a long-term supporter of the Severn barrage project and wanted to ensure it came to fruition but also wanted to “contribute much more on wider policy issues”, notably African development.

Hain was raised in South Africa and first came to prominence as a hardline anti-apartheid campaigner before entering mainstream politics.

He said he would not rule out a return to the front bench should he be asked back in future.

Butetown faith march boosts image of Islam

Walkers enjoyed the sunshine yesterday as they took part in an interfaith march designed to boost the image of Islam in Wales.

Between 40 and 50 took part in the event, a revival of a tradition instigated in Cardiff by the late Sheikh Said Hassan Ismail, who served the Muslim community of Butetown for over 60 years.

Alice Street Mosque imam Zane Abdo organised the event in honour of Sheik Ismail.

Mr Abdo said: “Right now, Cardiff has been in the media because of Muslims for the wrong reasons.

“I want to put Muslims in Cardiff in the limelight for the right reasons.

“The arrests to do with the extremism in South Wales – that is not representative of Muslims in the community.

“This march was a reflection of the true nature of the community and what this community is about.

“I hope that the media will do it justice and give credit to what we did today.”

Earlier this month, a 40-year-old Cardiff man was among seven arrested on suspicion of funding overseas terrorism with money linked to the smuggling of stimulant khat.

In February, Cardiff brothers Abdul Miah, 25, of Ninian Park Road, Riverside, and Gurukanth Desai, 30, of Albert Street, Riverside, were jailed for almost 30 years after plotting to bomb the London Stock Exchange.

A third Cardiff man, Omar Latif, 28, of Neville Street, Riverside, was jailed for 10 years and four months, with an extended period on licence of another five years.

The three Cardiff men were part of a nine-strong cell which included four men from Stoke-on-Trent and two from London.

And city Islamic teacher Abu Hajar – quoted as a spokesman for terror group Islamic Path in 2009 – came under fire last month for calling on Welsh Muslims to “physically” support the fight for sharia law abroad.

Mr Abdo said: “What we did today was a big step in rejecting extremism.

“When people are happy and walking around and smiling and coming together, that reduces extremism and pushes it to the fringes, where it should be.”

The march through Butetown started at 1.30pm at Alice Street Mosque.

Mr Abdo said: “All ages took part. Some were very young – my little daughter is a year and a half – while some of the elders were in their 70s.

“And it was people of different faiths. There were Muslims and Christians and people who did not believe in anything.

“Granted, there were not great numbers, the majority were of Islamic faith.”

Mr Abdo added he was determined there would be more marches in the future.

“This is something that Cardiff really needs,” he said.

“We are going to continue this – it is just the first.

“When we have festivals we are going to march in the street and encourage people, whether Muslims or not, to participate like they used to.”
Mr Abdo claimed the experience was so emotive he wept.

“It brought tears to my eyes and to some of the elders’,” he said.
